Relaxed New Year's Eve
I hope everyone had a lovely holiday! River and I had an early Christmas with his family in Michigan and then we flew down to Georgia to spend Christmas day with mine. Needless to say we're both a little wiped from travel and are very thankful for having a few more days off from work to rest.
In between nap time with the fur babies I wanted to share a more relaxed New Year's Eve look. Instead of observing the new year from a packed bar in the city, we're going to a dear friend's apartment to celebrate. This is way more up my alley. I do love to get guessied up every once in a while, but when it's freezing cold it's one of the last things I want to do. This inspired my to experiment with creating a cozy yet party appropriate look and I have to say I love how it turned out.
The sweater's texture and rolled sleeves are the main cozy element while the skirt and black leggings (no tights here!) keep it a tad on the fancy side. Even the ankle boots keep it more casual with their little wood heel. If I had wanted to tip this in a more dressy direction I would have opted for a block heel pump such as these.
LEGGING TRICK - I've mentioned this before but I am not a fan of wearing tights. I was in a dance company for 11 years and wore enough tights to last me a lifetime. So to avoid the annoying tummy squeeze and fear of runs I opt for leggings under my dresses and skirts. Benefits of leggings vs. tights:
1. Leggings create way less static.
2. No annoying tummy squeeze.
3. No runs!
4. Leggings are much warmer!
5. It is easier to create an opaque look with leggings than with tights. (I usually wear two pairs to achieve this)
THE T SWEATER - I waited a long time for this beauty. It’s made by the lovely folks at Jamie and the Jones and it is my first sustainably made sweater! I’m crazy about the texture and the oversized fit is just right for my 5’5” frame. Needless to say I’ve worn it almost every day since I received it. I’ll be sharing a post specifically on this sweater and my new found love for Jamie and the Jones soon!
POPS OF COLOR - I’m still trying to break my mold when it comes to neutrals so instead of going for my little black mini skirt I opted for something a little longer and in color. I still have cream and black in there but the green skirt is refreshing and contrasts so nicely with my oxblood bag. It’s a small ode to the Christmas holiday even though it has already passed us. I might save this one in my mind for the next holiday season!
TEXTURES - The textures in this look are some of my favorites. The chunky weave pattern of the sweater mixed with a flowy and airy bottom. Then a sleek and smooth handbag to contrast both. I believe balancing texture is just as important as balancing proportions. If this skirt was more form fitting and stretchy sleek like a pencil my top would look too heavy and bulky. But the air of the skirt gives it a hint of volume and almost neutralizes the oversized top. Form and texture. Two elements that are so fun to play with and can truly elevate your style.
